The government has lifted the nationwide curfew and prohibitory orders imposed earlier this week, a day after former Chief Justice Sushila Karki was sworn in as Nepal’s interim prime minister.

The Nepali Army had initially enforced the curfew until 6 a.m. Saturday. With the restrictions now removed, public transport resumed operations this morning, and long-route buses from Kathmandu to other parts of the country have also departed. Some vehicles had already left the capital from the Gongabu bus park on Friday evening.

The Kathmandu Valley is seing heavy presence of vehicles and people.Karki’s appointment on Friday night at a special ceremony at Sheetal Niwas, administered by President Ram Chandra Paudel, comes in the wake of weeks of Gen-Z–led protests demanding the dissolution of the House of Representatives and a non-partisan interim administration.

As Nepal’s first woman to hold the post of prime minister, Karki now leads a government tasked with conducting new parliamentary elections within six months and transfer the power. Authorities report that the security situation across the country is steadily returning to normal.
