President Ram Chandra Paudel has appointed former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as the head of an interim government under Article 61 of the Constitution of Nepal. The decision followed day-long consultations at the President’s Office, Sheetal Niwas, and meets a key demand of the Gen-Z demonstrators pressing for Parliament’s dissolution and a non-partisan administration, according to Presidential Press Advisor Kiran Pokhrel.
This marks the first time since the promulgation of Nepal’s new constitution that a prime minister has been appointed under Article 61, which empowers the president to act as head of state and exercise duties in line with constitutional and federal law.
